If you have a large allotment, vegetable plot or kitchen garden and envisage a summer of heavy watering, then the Harcostar Water Butt Linking Kit will play an essential part in your water butt-based water collecting and distibution system.
The Harcostar Water Butt Linking Kit consists of a 1.5m long section of flexible plastic pipe and two plastic elbow connectors and by fitting this product, two or more water butts and rainwater tanks can be easily linked together to increase your water storage capacity.
As rainwater is free and a valuable garden commodity, linking a series of butts together with the Harcostar Water Butt Linking Kit makes both economic and environmental garden sense.

USING THE HARCOSTAR WATER BUTT LINKING KIT
Here are some important points to consider when setting up a series of water butts linked together with the Harcostar Water Butt Linking Kit. We’ve based this information on a series of three water butts but of course, your system could stretch off much further into the distance than this!
• Bottom linking water butts will allow all the butts to fill at the same rate and helps to prevent water stagnating as it’s moving almost constantly. The manufacturer recommends drilling a 25mm diameter hole in the second or middle butt (in a series of three) to accept the linking kit connector joining this butt to the third. The other end of this linking kit is inserted into the third butt through the usual port. This particular set up is recommended if you wish to run an irrigation system off each butt as they all empty at the same rate.
• It’s possible to use the tap hole in the second butt as a fixing point for the linking kit. This would save drilling a hole but would also mean the tap couldn’t be used on this butt.
• All water butts can be linked at the top, which has the advantage of being easier to install (eg. no drilling), but the third butt in the chain won’t fill until both the first and second are completely full.
If you choose to drill a hole to attach the linking kit to the middle or further butts in the chain as detailed above, we advise to do the following:
• Drill a 25mm hole – this does not need to be threaded
• Clean off any excess burrs or material and ensure the hole is round and true
• Do this before filling the butt!
The manufacturer offers the above advice on the benefits of linking water butts at the bottom and top but it’s entirely at your discretion which method you use.
