Nemasys Codling Moth Killer can be used as both a stand-alone or follow-up treatment to keep a check on codling moth larvae in the late summer and autumn. It's hats off to the 20 million, naturally occurring beneficial nematodes (steinernema carpocapse) contained in each pack as they do the hard work in killing the pupae of the codling moth on fruit trees and in the soil underneath.
Nemasys Codling Moth Killer is supplied in a pack of three treatments, each of which is applied weekly over a three week period; it can only be used between September and October and temperatures must be in excess of 14°C. Apply Nemasys Codling Moth Killer to the ground below the tree and to the tree trunk itself, where pupae overwinter - a single pack will treat up to 20 trees (40m2).

For best results when using your Nemasys Codling Moth Killer, follow the guidelines below:
- Wet the area before applying the nematodes and apply with a pump sprayer or watering can
- Avoid applications in bright sunlight, apply during evenings or dull conditions.
- Use entire packet at one time and do not store made up solution
Codling Moth
- Use to control the over wintering pupae on trees and ground from September till October when daytime temperatures are above 14°C
- Apply each of the 3 applications to the same area at 5 to 7 day intervals to ensure all hatchings are killed |Apply to the trunk of the tree/main branches and to an area of soil equal to the tree cover above
- If treating less than 20 trees increase the rate of application
- Completely safe to use around children, pets and wildlife

- Trees have to be treated at a rate of 0.5 litre per tree.
- For example, using a 3 litre pump sprayer to treat 12 trees, half the pack would be used at a time, treating 6 trees with each application
Nematode Pest Control Delivery
Being a live product nematodes are ordered weekly every Thursday. The nematodes are then delivered on Wednesday of the following week for delivery by the end of the week.
For example an order placed on a Monday would be ordered on Thursday, received the following Wednesday for delivery by the end of that week.

Moving into my new house last September I found that apples on two of the apple trees in my seaside garden were inedible they were so full of holes. Working for the company that produces Nemasys Codling Moth Killer I decided to practice what I preach, and applied the nematodes immediately. This is easy using a garden sprayer and I chose a damp evening so that the nematodes had a chance to get undercover before the next day. Trees in our seaside garden struggle against the elements in any case so they certainly don’t need the extra burden of Codling Moths. This year the apples are untouched, not a hole anywhere, and knowing that the Nemasys range is harmless to children, pets and wildlife I know my pets are safe as well.
What are Caterpillars and Codling Moths and how do they live (lifecycle)?
- The caterpillar stage of the butterfly and moth's lifecycle comes in a vast range of sizes, shapes and colours. Fortunately very few of these are of any problem to the gardener that need controlling.
- The most common of the troublesome ones are the distinctive Large and Small Cabbage White Caterpillars, up to 40mm and 25mm long respectively. The Large Cabbage White has distinctive yellow and black markings and a hairy body. The Small Cabbage White Caterpillar is pale green with a velvety appearance. They both have two generations a year with caterpillars occurring from spring to early autumn.
- The Gooseberry Sawfly is a pest that attacks gooseberries and red and white currants and can strip them of all leaves. All three species of Gooseberry Sawfly Caterpillars are up to 20mm long, pale green and with two of the species being heavily marked with black spots. Damage starts mid to late spring, but there can be several generations in a season
- The Codling Moth Caterpillar is small and white with a brown head. It burrows into the fruit of apples and pears in mid to late summer. By the time the fruit is ripe they have finished feeding and drop on to the bark of the tree and the soil immediately underneath to over-winter ready for the moths to emerge in the late spring.
- Indoors, caterpillar damage can occur outside the usual times.
What damage do caterpillars do and how do I recognise it?
- Cabbage White Caterpillars can decimate a vegetable plot, especially brassicas or ornamental beds, especially nasturtiums. The Large Cabbage White feeds mainly on the outer leaves leaving holes and sometimes completely stripping leaves. The Small Cabbage White feeds mainly on the hearts of cabbages and other brassicas.
- By the time that the fruit is ready for picking the Gooseberry Sawfly can completely strip the leaves of the fruit bushes leaving them severely weakened and producing a poor crop the following year.
- The Codling Moth feeds on the core of the fruit of apples and pear and to a lesser extent walnut and quince. When they have eaten the fruit they exit leaving a small reddish brown hole in the skin with brown droppings know as frass. Upon cutting the fruit open you may find that there is very little left that can be eaten.

- To control caterpillars apply as soon as the caterpillars are first seen applying to all leaf surfaces where the pest is present. Make sure to spray pests with a solution as caterpillars not directly sprayed will not be controlled.
- To control Codling Moths apply September to October to the trunk of the tree/main branches and to an area of soil equal to the tree cover above.
