Fence Frames Espalier Style
Harrod Horticultural’s Trade Division was approached by Anna Murphy (Anna Murphy Gardens) working on a project for a Pop Up Champagne bar outside Marcus Wareing’s Gilbert-Scott Restaurant at St Pancras in central London.
Anna’s brief to us was to design, build and supply 2 espalier style fence frames – the problem being instead of being able to insert them into the ground we had to find a way of affixing them to 2 rather large, full, solid lead planters. The frames would then have planting trained along them to help screen the area from the busy Euston Road and create a tranquil and calm oasis in the middle of one of London’s main thoroughfares.
Our design team came up with the idea of using the depth of the planters to our advantage to insert the uprights and to create a ‘hidden brace’ under the soil level and using footplates where the uprights came out of the soil to give added structural rigidity.
2 of these structures were required - in a very short lead time of just a week! Not only could we design and manufacture them in this time due to our UK design and manufacturing capabilities, but due to the excellent relationship between Harrod and the designer (and the designers very tight deadline of a day to build the pop up garden!) we offered to deliver and help install them on site, a job well rewarded with lunch supplied by the team at The Gilbert–Scott.
"Harrod Horticultural helped me on the build of a popup garden in London. The design team designed, delivered and built a free-standing frame to sit in an enormous planter, which allowed me to create a screen for climbing plants. This was exactly how I had imagined and the job was a total success! Thank you Harrod!"
