Capable of reaching a height of 60cm, the grey-green coloured leaves of this shrubby perennial are used extensively in stuffing mixes served with meats and a tea made from sage leaves has a centuries-old reputation for easing sore throats. Planting this must-have herb around your cabbages and carrots will help deter pests such as cabbage moth and carrot fly - and even slugs.

Growing Tips
Sow sage seeds indoors from February and directly into the soil from April onwards. Choose a sunny location for your plants - sage is a native of the Mediterranean - and water sparingly. You can pick leaves and use them immediately for that home-grown burst of freshness or dry them for future use. Leaves should be harvested up until May and June (before the plant flowers) for maximum taste.
