Roman Pergola and Arbour with Bench
After previously working on the kitchen garden restoration, Harrod were asked back to design a structure for a riverside rosewalk. The brief was for a traditional 'estate fence' style support structure to extend approximately 65m alongside a towpath. At the midpoint of the fence, steps travelling up a small bank from a formal lawn were required to allow access to the tow path. The steps required covering with a bespoke aluminium Roman pergola and set into the left and right hand fence runs, bespoke lattice panelled arbours with integrated benches were requested. The lattice panels would allow climbing roses to establish a floral screen also providing a certain amount of shelter. Working with the client and his architect we produced several concepts before arriving at the design which you see here.
The wide central arch, which was fabricated using 38mm aluminium box section for the main hoop elements, was designed to allow low voltage cabling to run neatly internally for a lantern to be fitted. The arbours also were provided with neat internal cabling for lighting.
Harrod, over the years, has built up a network of trusted and experienced garden professionals that we can recommend to our customers if required, and in this case we were able to put the client in touch with an expert plantswoman to assist with the selection of roses, fruit trees and other plants to ensure the success of the project, and of course importantly, to provide expert ongoing husbandry for the garden.
The rosewalk structures were installed by the client's own building contractors who were working on site at the time. Two members of the Harrod installation team worked closely with them providing guiding assistance when needed. For this project this was the most efficient and practical route for installation.
"I have been extremely pleased with the support from Harrod Horticultural and the quality of their products and would be very happy to recommend their range to others."
