Square Pergola Contemporary
After designing and planting the main communal courtyard, driveway and two of the four gardens at Kinnerton Barns (4 barn conversions on a family farm in North Wales), the Daisy Barn Client then asked me to design his own large rear country garden which included a separate space for an Entertaining Courtyard. The Client’s garden was previously used for washing cows and was largely left as slurry.
As the garden was requested to be left ‘open’ to both the views of the fields beyond and their next door neighbour’s garden (Client’s best friend), the Designer felt that some height was needed to create some context and create some delineation of space in the different parts of the garden. Also to provide the perfect opportunity to grow climbing roses & clematis! A Harrod Horticultural Square Pergola 2.5m wide x 2.4m deep, was chosen to span a central path edged in lavender between four buxus parterres. This leads to a seating area and small water feature backed by strongly scented roses that smell wonderful in the evening, so this was a good fit! Multi-stem trees (Amelanchier Lamarckii) either side provide a balance.
The Harrod Horticultural Contemporary Pergola was selected for its clean lines and simplicity of design. The square style gives it a classic but contemporary feel which sat well with the traditional style of the barn conversion married with the contemporary materials used in the garden.
Harrod Horticultural provided us with the colour samples the Pergola was available in. Black was chosen as it was felt in such a bright, sunny and open garden the black stood out the best. Construction drawings followed for the enlarged version of the standard measurements and was soon installed following confirmation.
The pergola has been a great success, providing a clear focal point in the garden and a stylish, year round structure whilst the roses come to maturity over the years. It also has the added benefit to the garden of being up lit at night.
"Thanks Clare. The garden looks absolutely fabulous so a huge thank you to you. You should see it with the lighting finished. It looks stunning at night. You're very talented. Andy and I really appreciate your hard work. "
