The black shuttle trays simply sit in the watering tray in contact with the damp capillary matting for a partly automated watering system - you still need to top up the trays as the matting dries out.

This order replaced earlier ones which had reached the end of their life. So I expect them to be just as useful as the earlier ones were. They certainly make watering a whole lot easier. They appear to have been designed for the same manufacturers shuttle trays, so are fit for that purpose. That may cause problems for other trays. Putting small plant pots directly on these watering trays is just as effective, if a little more tedious. However, I'm saddened to see the statement above that "this product is no longer available". What is going to replace them?

Whilst this tray and mat does exactly what you'd expect, the dimensions mean that it is just too narrow for the standard size seed cells sold by most garden centres. I've had to cut off a single row of cells from mine in order to fit them cross wise. That way I can get two on side by side, otherwise you can only fit one on each tray - which is a waste.
