Our Extra Heavy Duty Bird Netting is made from extruded black polypropylene to create a rigid plastic net with a 16mm x 16mm square mesh, and is used as side netting on all our manufactured Fruit Cages.
This strong netting is an ideal deterrent to birds, rabbits and other similar pests, but has a large enough mesh to allow invaluable pollinating insects to pass through.

Bought to replace the netting on my Harrods fruit cage, around eight years old, which had suffered from tears at he bottom caused by wind and weather, allowing birds to access the fruit. This is tough stuff but not invincible. The new netting was, with care and persistence, secured to the cage frame and the ground within a couple of hours. Yes it is awkward, but it's stiffness is a positive in that it holds itself up while you secure it. Your own steel pegs hold it securely at the bottom, we'll now see if it outlasts this 77-year old.
I'm about to renew my bird netting after 10 years. It didn't last intact for 10 years due to rabbits on the allotment biting through it so I had to reinforce the bottom of it with rabbit fencing. I wondered about using the more expensive bird netting but having seen the way mice chump through fairly sturdy plastic I think this netting and replacing rabbit fencing around the allotment is more secure to protect it from rabbits and rodents. I wondered about replacing it with narrower butterfly proof netting but that would keep out the bees and many pollinators so I'll just cover brassicas in the fruit cage with a smaller veg cage with finer netting.
The Heavy duty bird netting is excellent for stretching over a wooden fruit cage and stapled into place (see pic). It is also good for hanging/stretching over an aluminium frame to protect peas - used cable ties to secure net to poles. Doesn't tangle, is strong and rigid but flexible Just check that the edges have been cut straight.
